Art Therapy and Counselling

What is transpersonal art therapy?

Transpersonal art therapy is a form of therapy that brings art-making and conversation together to support your emotional and personal wellbeing. It is grounded in transpersonal theory, which considers the whole of you: your body, personal history, relationships, culture, values, and sense of meaning, and creates space to explore how your inner life connects with the wider context of your world.

Art making becomes the means through which you can understand yourself and your experiences more deeply, to heal, discover, or reconnect with what feels most true to you

This way of working may be helpful if you :

• Feel stuck or disconnected
• Sense there's more beneath the surface
• Are moving through grief, loss or change
• Want support that isn't only talking or analysing
• Are drawn to a slower, more body-based approach
• Are curious about recurring feelings, images, dreams, or patterns

A session might look like:

• A check-in to see what’s present for you
• Creative exploration using drawing, painting, clay, collage, or guided imagery
• Time to reflect on images, feelings, or the experience of making

There’s no right way to show up. You can talk, make, sit quietly, or move between the two. The work moves at your pace.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be good at art?

Not at all! This isn't about skill or making something beautiful. It's about making space and using art to express what feels hard to name.

Will my art be judged or interpreted?

The art you make belongs to you. As your therapist I won't be interpreting it, but supporting you to explore what emerges.

What does "transpersonal" mean?

Transpersonal means "beyond the individual self." This approach recognises that life and meaning is shaped by more than conscious thought alone. Your body, emotions, history, relationships, culture, and beliefs all matter.

How is this different from regular counselling?

The primary difference between art therapy and traditional counselling is that art therapy involves the use of art-making as a form of self-expression and exploration.

Transpersonal therapy goes a step further, drawing on meditation, visualisation, and breathwork to access parts of the self that sit beyond everyday conscious thought (the spiritual, the somatic). It recognises that we’re bigger than our biography and that healing can happen in places language doesn't always reach.

What if I don't know what to talk about or make?

You don't need a clear goal or a problem to solve. You're welcome to come unsure or simply wanting space. Sessions can move between creative making and conversation, guided by you.

What does it mean that you're a student practitioner / in clinical training?

It means that while I'm not yet fully qualified, I'm in the final stretch of my transpersonal art therapy and counselling degree, working under the guidance of an experienced supervisor.

I'm deeply invested in growing into the practitioner I'm becoming, and acknowledge that getting there only comes with practice. Because sessions are free, the only thing asked of you if you'd like to work with me is a willingness to give this a go.
